Bill Smith, Designing a Photograph (***) Good general purpose book on the elements of composition and design, including color, shape, perspective, and object placement. Bryan Peterson, Learning to See Creatively, How to Compose Great Photographs (***) An excellent book dealing exclusively with how to visualize, compose, frame and make the best of your photo opportunities. Includes sections on how to incorporate different lighting conditions, shutter speeds, and times of day to create the desired effect in your photo composition. The Art of Seeing, A Creative Approach to Photography, Kodak Books. (***) A good book for beginners and amateurs shows the basics of how to create with light and compose your photographs. Like most of Kodak's books, it is inexpensive and a quick read if you are already familiar with the material, but it has plenty to learn if you aren't. Out of Print Books:Kathryn Marx, Right Brain Left Brain Photography, The Art and Technique of 70 Masters (**+) More theoretical than the average book on how to photograph, Kathryn Marx walks through some of the highlights from 70 photographers with the idea of letting us see some of the more intuitive and creative portions of their vision. |
