Charles Campbell, The Backpacker's Photography Handbook. (****)  An excellent guide to the practicalities of getting great photos while camping and backpacking.  The photographic advice can be found in other books, but the combination of practical tips on which equipment to take, where to go, how to arrange your schedule, and what to look for makes it a worthwhile read.

Boyd Norton, The Art of Outdoor Photography:  Techniques for the Advanced Amateur and Professional.   (****)  Boyd Norton takes simple and compelling shots of both wildlife and scenery.   In this book he gives plenty of tips on how to both compose interesting photos and how to make sure they are properly exposed and developed.  In particular, I liked his use of multiple shots to illustrate each theme.  I find this much more instructive than just seeing the "best shots" of a photographer.

Brian Bower, Lens, Light, and Landscape,  The art and technique of scenic photography (***)  A step by step guide to different types of outdoor landscape and scenic photography, ranging from how to shoot different scenes to the effect of lenses and perspective.  Also covers the use of light, and has a brief section on film and equipment.

Galen Rowell, Alaska: Images of the Country

Galen Rowell, The Art of Adventure (****)  Wonderful content on what it means to be an adventurer, and an adventure photography.

Galen Rowell's Vision:  The Art of Adventure Photography

Galen Rowell, Mountain Light : In Search of the Dynamic Landscape

Art Wolfe, The Art of Photographing Nature (****)  Pictures are shown in pairs, illustrating different methods of shooting scenes.  The author and reader can then compare notes on their preferences.  I found this a very useful and instructive way to learn.

Joe McDonald, Designing Wildlife Photographs (****)  A practical guide to putting together excellent quality wildlife shots, with plenty of advice on subjects, how to shoot them, and how to compose the shots themselves.

John Shaw, The Nature Photographer's Complete Guide to Professional Field Techniques, (***+)  A comprehensive guide to the field techniques of an accomplished professional.  Advice ranges from how to use many different lenses to how to compose your photographs.   There is also an extensive section on close-up and macro photography.

David Muench, Nature's America (***+)  Wonderful photographs of natural scenes in North America.   Very pastoral in effect.  I enjoy studying Muench's photos because I feel I can imagine making them and can try and learn from them directly.  This is in contrast to Galen Rowell's photographs, where I can usually only sit with my jaw hanging down and wish I even had a clue how I could start to get some of his shots.  Each, of course, has their place!
