I'm not completely sure I knew there was a white morph of the Reddish Egret until two weeks ago, and I certainly don't think I'd seen one before that...
When I first saw a prototype Fujifilm Finepix F200EXR at PMA I knew it was going to be a cool point and shoot and one I'd want to get a chance to review. I've been a big fan of the low noise at high ISO of the Finepix cameras ever since the venerable Finepix F30. But a couple of its successors didn't really surpass its performance, so I wanted to see for myself whether this new generation of sensor would deliver the promised performance....
Kodak announced this week they have stopped making Kodachrome--probably the most well-known film of all time. This has caused no end of commentary but the truth is that of course it ceased to matter to most of us a long time ago.
Do you think you have plenty of time to decide whether to upgrade to Windows 7? If you want to get it for a reasonable price, you may have a lot less time than you think...
It's not only mammals and birds which benefit from eye level photography. Some of our smaller friends like this threatened Texas Desert Tortoise also look more interesting and compelling when photographed at eye level.
I've always been a little jealous of the possibility of stacking Teleconverters which Canon shooters seem to be able to do more easily than Nikon photographers. At the same time I've been puzzling over how to get my mind around having a D300 and a D700. Then yesterday on the pier at Padre Island it hit me...
Welcome to DPS 7-05. We recently returned from our 4th spring visit to South Texas after a great safari week with some very happy participants who got the bird photo opportunities they were hoping for and more. As always we enjoyed the hospitality of some of the premier private photo locations in the Southwest, including the hot new property Campos Viejos--1st place winner in this year's Lens and Land photo contest!
PhotoResuce (the world's best image recovery software) has been updated to version 3.1.10. In addition to the usual RAW file format updates, this version allows the extraction of large thumbnails from RAW files.
Nikon has launched a new website with articles for photographers. Learn and Explore features articles from Nikon world and by Nikon photographers. There are some good tips in there about how pros are using the latest in Nikon gear. But don't expect any impartial reviews of course as it's all paid for by Nikon, so you'll see all Nikon products used.--David
I've owned several different portable blinds and they've all been a compromise. I just got a new one and have found it much better than previous ones I've owned so I wanted to pass the information along to you...
You've probably noticed that your photos look better without glass on them. But of course formal framing practically requires glass for photos. This comes from a long tradition of needing to protect original photographs from handling and from UV radiation. With digital though, we can decide that's okay and that we'll take our chances and reprint the image in 10, 20 or 50 years when the archival inks finally start to fade. But it took me awhile to figure out a way to take advantage of that while still having my photos look good...
For those who've followed the evolution of ProShow they know there isn't a more powerful package on the market for producing DVDs and slideshows. With all that power comes some complexity. If you've been stymied about how to use some of the advanced features or you simply want to get started with ProShow the good news is that Photodex is having a Clearance Sale on their training DVDs to make room for their new series based on ProShow 4.0.
As regular readers are more than aware, one of my biggest gripes about Nikon's "mini-pro" cameras like the D300 and D200 (and other mid-range models all the way down to the D40) is that they do not have the excellent locking eyepiece system of the D3 and D700 which allows the DK-2 eye cup to securely lock onto the camera. To fix this problem i've bought no less than 8 different accessories marketed to solve the problem, but not until today did I find one that worked...

When David Tobie first showed me what looked like a Christmas tree ornament at the Press Sneak Peak event at PMA I thought perhaps it was a trendy European household decoration befitting the new European management at Colorvision/Datacolor. But once I realized it was carefully colored in white, gray and black it dawned on me that the SpyderCube was actually a pretty cool photo tool.
We're excited to announce that thanks to some new flight schedules and lower fuel surcharges we've been able to upgrade our November African wildlife photo safari to include Victoria Falls without changing the price.
