Special Issue: Serious $$ Rebate for D1X and D1H purchases

We're so excited about Nikon's rebate that we're putting out a special issue of DPS. We've also got Moose's Canon 1D review to tell you about, as well as exciting news about The D1 Generation and our first official DPS User Tip of the Week.

But first we want to tell you about a no-brainer software purchase--Photorescue: High on the list of nightmares for digital photographers is losing images through card crashes, accidental erasure, or over-eager re-formatting. Photorescue has been used repeatedly and successfully by both Moose and myself to recover precious images from precisely those situations--in cases where standard utilities such as Norton either fail or make the problem worse. The best thing is, it is only $29--so it will pay for itself the very first time it saves a salable image for you! We've put together more information on Photorescue, along with an evaluation version for you to try at http://www.nikondigital.org/products/rescue/photorescue.htm. Or if you're in a hurry, just grab the eval from http://www.nikondigital.org/products/rescue/purchase.exe

$500 Dealer Rebate on D1X and D1H

Maybe Nikon heard people gripe that the $1200 they've offered for old D1s wasn't compelling, because they've just come out with a killer rebate on the D1X and D1H. It is $500 cash off the purchase price. My favorite part is that unlike all those coupon rebates which make the buyer do the work, this is a dealer rebate, so you get the $500 off at purchase and Nikon re-imburses the dealer. If you were wondering whether to buy a backup camera, or whether you could afford a trade-up from your D1, it just got a lot easier! The official text from Nikon is:

Nikon USA is offering, through its dealer network, a US$500 "instant rebate" on the purchase of a Nikon D1H or Nikon D1X camera. Taking advantage of the rebate is simple: after settling on the best price with your dealer, the dealer then reduces that price by another US$500 on the spot (which is later paid back to them by Nikon). The program starts today and runs through March 31, 2002.

Moose's Canon 1D Review

Maybe Moose is the last guy you were expecting to review the 1D, let alone like it, but review it he did. As to how he liked it and whether you can get his matched pair of D1H bodies with custom ivory grips for cheap, you'll have to head over to http://www.nikondigital.org to find out! (yeah, I'm kidding about the ivory grips, but not the rest)

The D1 Generation is Shipping!

The D1 Generation is shipping. Initial feedback is incredibly positive (which after the year long effort Moose and I put into the book is very gratifying!) The 1,000 back orders will all be in peoples hands by the end of next week. Order your copy today!

DPS User Tip of the Week

From Joe McCary:  In my business I do lots of web galleries in Photoshop. I like this feature and use it for proofs from my D1X. BUT the key is to get the viewer to email me back to request prints etc. I looked for a long time how to do this. I finally got an Adobe programmer to help me, I later discovered how to add the subject to the email. So I now add this line to my web gallery in the Photographer's line. This makes the line a LINK to my email and sets the subject of the email to what ever I make it in the line.

Sneak Preview

We really will be doing a special issue on Windows XP, but we're still waiting for the final word from Microsoft. In the meantime, in addition to the issues we were planning to cover, around how to correctly and effectively use Windows built-in imaging support, we've noted that programs which load Compact Flash cards, including Nikon's View software and Pro Shooters own DigitalPro, can have inconsistent behavior when loading cards. We'll be digging into that further!

If you have a hot tip or news item for DigitalPro Shooter, write us at dps@proshooters.com. If your tip or news item is picked as the Shooters' Tip of the Week, we'll send you a really cool DigitalPro hat! Or just write us to let us know what you think of the newsletter.

To keep up with the latest articles and reviews, join Moose and I at http://www.nikondigital.org. For the latest versions of DigitalPro, visit http://www.proshooters.com/dp.

Good shooting and Happy Holidays!
