My D700 broke after going through X-ray scanner at an airport (menu, preview and single-shot release mode stopped working). It's still under warranty and the card says to send in equipment with receipt to specified location. So, do I just send in the body and receipt to the center and wait? Is there any way to check on the status of repair?

Yaroslav--Assuming you are in the USA the procedure is more or less:

* Carefully package the body along with a Nikon Service Request form (you can print it out from NikonUSA website).

* Send it in along with a copy of the sales receipt, keeping a copy of all documents for your self of course.

* Send it insured & trackable (I use Fedex Express Saver, for example) to one of their two locations (NY & CA, addresses on their site)

* You should get an email & postal mail confirmation of receipt & cost/warranty coverage once they get a chance to examine the camera (can be 3-10 days). If not you should of course start calling them via phone.

* You can approve the work online (for warranty work this is typically automatic), and also check the status once you have the Service Order # they sent you in the previous step.

* Then hopefully they have the needed parts & can send it back fairly quickly!--David

Thanks for info, I actually just sent the receipt/box without any Service Request, Express Insured mail, got a letter back from them 10 days later acknowledging the camera, estimated cost (0.00)

No estimate of the repair time though. How long do they usually take to repair?

Yaroslav--That depends on how busy they are and whether they need to get parts. They try to accomplish a 1-week turnaround time for repairs they can do without needing to get more parts, but it can stretch to 2 weeks or longer if they're swamped for some reason.

Beyond that if they need parts it can be just about any amount of time. My 12-24 just spent an extra 3 weeks there waiting for parts and my 600f/4 spent 3 months there one time. But those are the exception.--David

Well it's been 1.5 months since receipt confirmation of my D700, and no word from them...

Yaroslav--That's no fun. There should be a service order number on the first notice you got from them which you can use to look up on the website the status. It's usually sort of generic but should say whether it is waiting for a part or not at least. Other than that I'd sure get on the phone and talk to someone in person at this point!--David
