I’m just back from a great trip with my friends Will & Lawrence to Yellowstone and southern Montana. Due to scheduling issues we almost missed the winter season but got there just in time for some good snow scenes and plenty of animals along the roads…

Ben--Thx. The first day I was a bit worried about our bison/buffalo pix as the light was pretty bad, but then we got some gorgeous light for the next two days so it worked out nicely. More frost would have been fun, but I like the clean look these have also.--David

Dave--Yeah, of course I noticed it just as the email started to go out (left over from the last issue). I suspended the emailer and fixed the source hoping that might help, but no dice. And the last thing I wanted to do was stop & restart the mailing since I didn't want a bunch of folks to get it twice (FWIW we have about 12K folks on the email list so it winds up being a bit of a project when these things go out). Sigh--David

Yes, wonderful pictures. It's great to see what you can do when the snow isn't really quite deep enough to cover everything. Yellowstone in winter is on my life list, but I'm not sure if being close to retirement makes is more likely I'll go, or less likely! LOL Guess it all depends upon the economy.

Dan--Glad you enjoyed the photos. The great thing about almost all the US National Parks is that they don't have to be expensive. Clearly in winter if you want to access the snowbound areas of the park you need to deal with a snowcoach or snowmobile--either as part of a group or buying a seat on a scheduled tour--but the north end with most of the animals is driveable and there are motels right in Gardiner that are pretty cheap. And even in the park at the Mammoth Springs Lodge there were rooms with shared bath for $85/night (we splurged for rooms with private baths though I must admit).

You do of course need the time to get there & enjoy it.--David

Thank you for your post, David. It's important to remember that not every trip and not every location requires that we be part of an expensive tour. Better to enjoy a location on your own than not get there at all.

Of course you can go in June and still get 6-10 inches (2006)!
