I viewed a webinar from X-Rite. Although it was focused on their ColorMunki tool, but I found that the discussion of how to manage/calibrate your color spaces was extremely valuable--lot's of good explanations of the kinds of issues you might encounter as you try to get that print just right.

Just watched another webinar from X-Rite. Yes, this is a ColorMunki promo and there is some overlap in material from the webinar I referenced earlier; however, I found enough additional information about color management to be well worth my 1 hour attention.

If you have questions about monitor calibration/profiling and printer/paper profiling and "rendering" in color space mapping, you should view this--takes you from camera to print.

BTW: I've also watched similar webinars from Datacolor (Spyder), I found the X-Rite ones to be a little more informative.

Harry--Thanks for the link & the input on the webinars. I do a lot of alpha & beta testing for Datacolor so I'll pass along your feedback on the difference in info content in the respective webinars.--David

David,

I'd be very interested in hearing of first-hand experience with either the DataColor Spyder systems or the X-Rite ColorMunki systems.

Although there was no reference to DataColor in the webinar, a brief mention of the "superiority" of a spectrophotometer (ColorMunki) versus a colorimeter (Spyder??) made me look into this issue. Apparently (Wikipedia), a colorimeter uses filters to sample for specific parts of the spectrum while a spectrophotometer does not.

Anyway, my circumstances require that I be in research mode, rather than purchase more. So I'm not in anyway advocating one system over another. I just felt that I learned more about Color Management from the X-Rite series, over and above their product promo.

Also, although not webinars, the articles at Eizo's site are also very instructive on this topic.

E.g.

Harry--The Spyder is indeed a colorimeter (I also own a Gretag spectro, which has its place for sure), but the filters are carefully designed to make the device work as well as possible for display calibration. David Tobie, their color guru, makes a good case that with proper filters the colorimeter can actually do a better job but I'll need to see if I have his explanation written down (it might have been verbal) or can get him to re-state it, as I sure can't remember the details.--David

David,

I guess that's why the ColorMunki can be used for both Monitor calibration/profiling and printer/paper profiling while the Spyder system requires two separate devices: the Spyder3Elite for monitors and the Spyder3Print SR for prints.
