"Neck of the Woods"

There are thousands of these cabins scattered through-out the Great Smokey Mountains. Some are liveable but most set in ruins since the folks moved out.

I've always loved old abandoned farm houses. I can't count the number of times I've driven past an old farm house and thought about stopping to take a picture, but didn't.

I found this old house while shooting a recent assignment about a region in northeast North Carolina known as Alligator. It's an area primarily populated by decendents of slaves that have tradionally made a living working off the land, farming, trapping, hunting and fishing.

It's an endangered culture that is being displaced by modern times.

If only buildings could talk!

My neck of the woods is in the southern hills of New York's Adirondack Park. Shad bloom on Black Creek on one of those perfect May days when the warblers are singing, the black flies haven't hatched, and all is well with the world. Spring is even sweeter when it finally arrives.
