Excellent Scott - really impressive!
Do you mind if I ask what the setting was for the High ISO NR?
Also, does anybody know if the High ISO NR setting has any effect when shooting NEFs? I got my D300 a week ago and have been rather disappointed by the noise when shooting RAW at 1600 ISO - it actually seems to be a bit worse than my D70. I have just uploaded a sample to Nikon Technical Support and am waiting to hear from them whether they think the camera has a fault.

Dave, Download and install Panda Exif viewer (if you're on a PC). Then you can just right click on a photo and see all the exif info about how it was shot. I know there has to be other ways to do it, but that works for me. Makes it easy to check ISO, f stop, etc. There are other Exif viewers for the Mac, I'm sure.

Hi Dave.
High ISO NR was set to On (Normal). Long Exposure NR was Off. Active D-Lighting was Off. Color space was Adobe RGB.
I'm continually impressed by the results I'm getting from the D300. Though I miss the large viewfinder from the D2x, I spend far less time editing images for color/contrast/hue and get great colors right out of the camera compared to the D2x.
There are a few quirks where sometimes the camera seems to lock up for a few moments when doing rapid reviewing of images, but I'm about to install the firmware update and see if it clears up the quirkiness.
Scott

I haven't had my D300 quite a month (actually 2 weeks). I was able to get out yesterday and get some shots at the beach. Our company enters the Corporate Games each year and yesterday was the surf contest. I have two words for this camera....WOW! The autofocus was very fast and accurate. Having the ability to shoot up to 7 fps was fantastic, and the color right out of the camera was incredible. I was able to print with virtually no color corrections made. I didn't even need to sharpen! Of course I'm upgrading from a 5 year old D100, so it was even more impressive.
I noticed something sorta odd though. With a Sandisk 2gb card shooting RAW + JPEG basic the camera showed I could take 90 pictures. When I got home I downloaded 290! Has anyone else noticed this or am I reading something wrong?? That's a difference of 200 pics! Even if I take only the RAW pics (of which there were 145), that's still a difference of 55 shots! Maybe I have a setting wrong somewhere or I'm really not very good at math! I would hate to be switching out cards if I still have room for 10-15 more shots. Can anyone help?
Thanks! Jim

After searching for a few hours online I found an answer to my concern. The following is from the Nikonians.org website:
"The problem is that if you're shooting compressed NEF, the amount of compression that can be applied depends on the data in the photo. So, to get an accurate count, the camera must know all the pictures you're going to take ahead of time, which is of course impossible. So, the Nikon engineers are faced with a dilemma of how to display an image count they don't know. Their philosophy is obviously to take the most conservative estimate, which I think is an entirely reasonable solution. Better I have more exposures available than to run out when I thought I had more left." Larry – Nikonians website
