I noticed that JOBO makes an adapter to use SD cards on a CF device. Given the price of SD cards compared to CF, this might make sense - if it works! Has anyone tried this? I am sure that those who are professionals would probably not be interested but, being an amateur and shooting mostly landscapes with a D100 (JPEG only), I don't care much about the card speed. I think my D100 only writes at something like 40X or less? I would appreciate thoughts on this adapter.

Daniel - I have considered this as well, especially given the price of SD cards versus compactflash.

If you hear something, please let me know, or if you try it, please let me know your results.

Mike.

Dan,
One of my co-workers who shoots with Canon has been using these adapters now for sometime and thinks they are great.

Deborah,

Thanks! I found the listing for this adapter on BH Photo's site (29.95) but cannot find it on JOBO's home site. I don't know if this means that the adapter has been discontinued or is just not listed on the company's site. I also have not been able to find another brand for the SD-CF adapter.

Thanks for your info.

Mike,

I assume you have also seen this reply. If I can get one and try it out, I will let you know.

Dan

Dan, et al--There were a couple of these on the market years ago (Olympus made one, for example) but they were slow and then were unavailable. It'd sure be great if there was a fast one, especially with camera companies using both formats in their cameras.

Please _do_ let us know the performance on the adapter. Nikon's execs in fact recommended the idea of an adapter for those wanting to use a D80 as a backup to one of their other D-SLRs, but no one could actually find a good one aside from used on eBay.--David

Dan - Thanks, I did see that reply. I would like to know your experience, if you get one.

I shoot with 4 gig compactflash, but it would be nice to be able to get a couple 4 or 8 gig SD cards since they are so much less expensive.

But if performance is bad, it isn't worth it no matter what the price.

Mike.

David, Mike and Deborah,

I have ordered the JOBO SD to CF adapter and should receive it tomorrow (5 - 30) so I will try it out this weekend and give you a report.

Mike, Deborah and David,

I have tried the JOBO SD to CF adapter only briefly. It works perfectly in my D100. The adapter is a snug fit in the card slot but does fine. I have 2GB, 4GB and 8GB SD cards. The 8GB card only yields the same number of images as the 4GB card. I think this may be the D100. I don't have an 8GB CF card to confirm this.

In terms of speed, I can't tell any difference in the write speed from the camera to the adapter compared to a CF card. I only use the JPEG large - normal setting and I don't shoot RAW, even with the CF cards because of the speed of the D100. I turned off the auto sharpening in order to get 6 images in continuous mode instead of 3. This seems to be just as fast as using the CF card.

I purchased a Sandisk 4GB Ultra II with a MicroMate reader. I use the reader to transfer images from the SD to the computer. It is really fast. I noticed that several people suggested that you NOT use the SD card in the adapter to transfer images to the computer. In the first place, the adapter card will not fit my PC card adapter that I use for CF cards.

There certainly is a difference in the cost of 2GB and 4GB SD cards compared to CF cards. As I mentioned above, I am not sure why the 8GB card shows the same number of images as the 4GB card.

My D100 has firmware ver. 2.0 and I don't know if there is a firmware upgrade that will allow it to read 8GB cards.

I will do some more testing and let you know. So far, I am happy with the adapter. If someone else has one and has experience with a newer camera, I would like to hear about it.

Dan

Daniel--Thanks for that great report. It is good to hear that someone finally seems to be making a CF-SD adapter (again?) that performs well enough to use with D-SLRs. Especially for those with a D80 or other SD camera as a backup to their CF camera, that'll be quite helpful.

And as you mention it could be a way to save money as well, although CF cards do keep getting cheaper.

If anyone can gather more info on how it works with 8GB cards and whether Daniel's issue is specific to the D100, that'd be great too.--David
